The instant Lilly’s car pulled away, Logan climbed out of the Xterra and headed over to Veronica. He stopped a few feet away waiting for her to notice him.

“Logan, what are you doing here?” She’d finally spotted him. “If you’re looking for Lilly, you just missed her.”

“Actually, I was looking for you.” He took a couple steps forward.

“Me?” she said, wondering why he would possibly be looking for her. “What’s up?”

“Are you free tonight?”

“No big plans. Just dinner with my parents.” She dropped the sponge she was holding in the bucket.

“Come have dinner with me. There’s something I want to talk to you about.”

She frowned, “This isn’t some trick, is it? I know you were still mad at me for telling Lilly what I saw.”

“No trick. Just dinner between friends.” He smirked, “God, Mars, when did you become so suspicious?”

“About the time you came back from Tijuana,” she joked.

“So?”

She studied his earnest expression before nodding. “I’m done here in an hour.”

“Perfect. Just enough time for you to detail my car.”

--

Lilly threw her car into park in front of the Echolls’ mansion. Her curiosity was nagging at her ever since she saw Logan’s letter in her car. She had tossed it aside at first, but the entire ride to the Echolls’, she’d kept glancing at the letter.

Not being able to resist any longer, she snatched up the envelope and tore it open. Eyes skimmed over the neat scrawl of Logan’s masculine handwriting, before the paper dropped from her hands and she was reaching for her cell phone.

She growled in frustration when Logan didn’t pick up. Dialling Veronica, she tapped impatiently on her steering wheel. “Pick up, pick up, pick up.”

Again no answer.

Starting her car again, she reversed out of the long driveway and aimed the car in the direction of the Pep Squad car wash.

--

“Where’d you want to go for dinner?” Veronica asked, settling herself into the passenger seat.

“You pick,” he said graciously.

“Then you already know my answer.”

“Luigi’s it is.”

--

Duncan looked up when he heard the front door slam. “You’re home late.”

Lilly scowled, “Because I was driving all over town looking for Logan and Veronica.”

“Isn’t Logan still in Mexico?”

“He got back early.”

“Why were you looking for them? What’s so urgent?”

She waved the ‘dear John’ she’d gotten from him.

“A piece of paper?” he asked, purposely obtuse.

“His parting gift, along with this.”

He caught the shot glass she tossed at him. “‘I got baked in Ensenada.’ Cool.”

“No, not cool.” Lilly glowered, “He was all sappy at first – how he knew we were finally over and he wished me happy.”

“But?”

“He ended by saying that since I’d moved on, then so would he.”

“Still not seeing a problem.”

“He’s planning on moving on with Veronica,”

--

“So, what did you want to talk about?” Veronica asked after they had ordered.

“Us,” he answered, taking her hands.

“Us?” she said in confusion.

“I think we should date.”

“Are you out of your mind?” She pulled her hands down on to her lap. “You and Lilly just broke up. Not to mention Duncan and I.”

“We’re both free as birds, unattached, single. There’s nothing to stop us.”

“How about the fact that your ex is my best friend and my ex is yours?”

“They’ll get over it. Besides, they broke up with us, not the other way around. If they didn’t want us then why shouldn’t someone else want us?”

“What you’re saying is crazy. I could never do that to Lilly.”

Logan looked at her shrewdly. “You know, the only protests coming out of your mouth involve other people’s feelings. What about your own?”

She was at a loss for words. She worked her jaw up and down trying to come up with an answer. In the end, she stared at her hands while she answered. “I don’t know. I never really thought about it. I mean I know you’re my friend… and I like you… most of the time.” She glanced up at him to face his response. “And there’s always been… something… between us.”

“It’s called attraction, Veronica.”

She shook the possibilities out of her head. “It’s too soon. Even if I wanted to… it’s too soon.”

“Do you want to?” he asked eagerly.

Veronica ducked her head in embarrassment, her cheeks flushing red.

The left corner of his mouth lifted. “I guess that’s a yes.”

--

Logan pulled up in the Mars driveway, hopped out and opened her door.

“We said we’d do things as friends first,” she reminded.

“What? A friend can’t open a door for another friend?” He helped her down.

“And you don’t have to walk me to my door.”

“I just drove a girl home, of course I’m gonna walk her to the door. It’s not safe out here.”

“You mean it’s not safe to walk the three yards up to the Sheriff’s house?” she mocked.

“You could be mugged, kidnapped… trip on those tiles, sprain an ankle…”

“Logan,” she laughed. “You’re being silly.” They’d stopped at her door. “Well, thank you for walking me to my door, even if it was completely unnecessary.”

“You’re welcome.”

They stood there staring at each other for a moment. Veronica licked her lips nervously. “You’re not going to kiss me, are you? I don’t think making out is something friends do.”

“We could make it something friends do.” He leant down and brushed his lips against hers. Since she didn’t pull away, Logan deepened the kiss, sliding his hands around her waist, pulling her close.

They were startled apart when the door flung open beside them. Veronica wiped at her lips. “Hi, dad,” she said awkwardly.

“Veronica,” Keith greeted. His gaze landed on the boy. “Logan.”

“Sheriff.” Logan tucked his hands in his back pockets, sheepishly ducking his head.

“How was dinner?”

“Good,” Logan nodded.

“We went to Luigi’s.” Veronica tried to draw her father’s attention away from Logan.

“Veronica ate her weight in manicotti.”

Keith couldn’t contain his soft chuckle. “Drive safe, Logan. Veronica, say goodnight.”

“I had a good time,” Veronica said softly to Logan.

“I’ll see you tomorrow?” He backed toward his vehicle.

She nodded. She watched as Logan backed out and drove away.

“Tomorrow?” Keith asked as he guided his daughter into the house.

“He’s coming over to watch movies.”

“I don’t know how I feel about that.”

“Logan’s come over dozens of times before.”

“I never caught him kissing my sixteen year old daughter before.” Keith tapped his chin, “Oh, by the way, when did you trade in for a new boyfriend?”

Veronica slumped down on the sofa, Backup padding over to her to rest his head on her knee. “Duncan broke up with me.”

“When did this happen and why didn’t you tell me? I have to start polishing my gun so I can kill the boy that hurt my daughter.” He frowned when she shrugged. “It was that long ago that you don’t even remember when you broke up? I don’t need an exact time, honey.”

“He just stopped talking to me and began ignoring me.” She hugged Backup morosely.

Keith’s expression darkened. “Forget the polishing. He doesn’t deserve to be killed by a polished gun.”

“Dad,” she said admonishingly.

“Fine, I’ll drop the subject of how I plan on killing the boy. Now what’s going on between you and Logan? I thought he was Lilly’s boyfriend.”

“They broke up last week.”

“And now you’re dating Logan?”

“I don’t know. I know I like him... that I find him attractive, but then I remember that he’s Lilly’s boyfriend. I shouldn’t date her ex. I shouldn’t even want to date her ex.” She sighed, “She’s going to kill me.”

“If you think this way, why are you dating him?”

“We’re not really dating. I mean, he wants to, but he knows that I’m reluctant… and confused. We were just planning to spend time together… as friends. See where things go.”

“But you’re not dating?” he said sceptically.

“Not officially,” she said weakly.

“Alright.” He let the subject go for now. Patting her knee, he said, “You need to call Lilly. She’s been calling once an hour because you weren’t picking up your phone.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“Don’t stay up too late.” He kissed her forehead and then headed upstairs.

Veronica pulled out her cell and speed-dialled Lilly.

“Where were you and why weren’t you answering your phone?” Lilly demanded as soon as she answered.

“I was at dinner and my phone was on silent. What’s the big deal?”

“Logan wrote me a letter.”

“This was what you just had to call me about?”

“He said that we were finally over and that he realized it. That I had moved on and so should he.”

“That seems very reasonable.”

“He wants to move on with you.”

“Oh.”

“You don’t sound very surprised.”

“Because I’m not.” Veronica sighed, “I had dinner with Logan tonight.”

“You’ve already been out on a date?” Lilly was practically screeching.

“No! Of course not! He said he wanted to ask me something over dinner.”

“So Logan took you out to dinner to ask you out?”

“Exactly.”

“What’d you say?”

“I haven’t really answered him yet.”

“Why not?” Lilly demanded. “It’s not because of Duncan, is it? You don’t owe Donut anything after the way he treated you.”

“Not just Duncan, but you.”

“Me? Why should I affect your decision? You don’t need me deciding things for you.”

“No, but you and Logan just broke up. And best friends don’t date each other’s exes.”

“Hey, don’t worry about me. Logan and I are finished. I should have ended things with him a long time ago. Just worry about how you feel about him.” Lilly’s voice softened, “How do you feel about him?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never really thought of Logan as boyfriend material. He was always off limits to me because he was yours.”

“I think that he’d be a good boyfriend for you,” Lilly said honestly.

“I haven’t really decided yet, but it helps to know that you’re okay with it.” Veronica verified, “You’re sure you’re okay?”

“Of course, why wouldn’t I be?”

--

Lilly set down her phone and laid down on her bed.

“What did she say?” Duncan asked from the door.

“I’m pretty sure that I’ve just lost Veronica to the dark side.”

--

“I don’t know how comfortable I am with the idea of Logan coming over,” Keith commented as he prepared to leave for work.

Veronica rolled her eyes. “You let Duncan come over dozens of times.”

“But that was after I put the fear of god in him.” Keith pouted, “You’ve given me little to no warning or time to prepare for this new boyfriend.”

“Backup will be here.”

“The dog can be bribed.”

“Unlikely. It took two months of Duncan on his best behaviour before Backup would stop barking at him when he sat too close to me.” Veronica added, “Besides, Mom is home.”

The doorbell rang and the barking started.

Veronica beat Keith to the door. “Hi,” she greeted.

Logan lifted the bags in his hands. “I brought movies and enough Chinese food to feed an army.”

“My favourite.”

“I know.” The instant he stepped over the threshold, he had two paws planted on his chest. He quickly dropped the food on the living room table and crouched to pat the pit bull. “How’s my favourite killer? Have you been a good boy?”

Keith watched, disgruntled that his vicious guard dog was happily lapping at Logan’s face. “This is not acceptable.”

“Dad,” Veronica stated firmly, “just go to work. We’ll be fine.” She shoved him toward the door.

“But, Logan… the dog… alone…” Keith mumbled.

“Go!”

When the door finally closed behind the Sheriff, Logan grabbed Veronica’s hand and pulled her to him. “Have you made any decisions yet?”

“Since yesterday? Tons. I picked out my outfit,” she twirled around in her pink sundress, “and my sandals. I decided to take an extra class next semester.” She giggled at his glare. “It took Duncan two weeks to convince me to be his girlfriend. What makes you think that you can do that same overnight?”

“I have stronger persuasive powers… and I’m more persistent.”

She pouted. “No gifts.”

“Chinese food and movies,” he pointed at the bags.

“That’s our date, not a gift.”

Logan patted his chest and down to his pant pockets to see if he was carrying anything that he could give her. His hands stopped at his back pocket and a thought came to him. Reaching for his wallet, he flipped through his bills and pulled out a fifty dollar bill.

Veronica’s eyebrow arched when he started folding the bill. A smile spread across her lips when he finished and handed her the bill. “A shirt?”

“My shirt. Keep it with you.” He folded her hands around it. “It’ll be like I’m always at your side.”

“So I can use this for emergencies?”

“Of for whatever,” he blushed.

They stood staring at each other for a moment before Veronica leaned up on her tiptoes and pecked him on the lips. “Thank you,” she said softly, clutching on to the bill.

“You’re welcome.” He kissed her back, but his kiss was much deeper. He had lowered her to the couch when they were rudely interrupted.

Veronica laughed as she pushed Backup away.

“It’s not that funny,” Logan grumbled as he sat upright.

She clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle her amusement.

He wiped the doggy saliva off his face as he wrapped an arm around Backup. “I love you too, killer, but I don’t need a face full of tongue to know that.”

She patted his knee, “Come on, let’s eat.”

--

When Keith arrived home, he found Logan sitting asleep on the sofa with Backup resting his hand across his lap.

The pit bull raised his head at the noise. Recognizing his owner, he lowered his head again, keeping his eyes on Keith.

Keith studied Backup. “What do you see in him?”

Hearing noise in the kitchen, he went to investigate. “You know your boyfriend is asleep on our couch?”

Veronica continued to chop carrots. “He passed out during ‘Roman Holiday.’”

He nodded in understanding. “You’re making dinner?”

“Mom’s sleeping.”

“She’s been up there all day?”

“I checked on her a couple times.” She glossed over the part where she had to remove an empty bottle of vodka from the room. “She wasn’t feeling well.”

“Right,” Keith said grimly. Trying to be cheerful, he asked, “What are we having tonight?”

“Roasted chicken and vegetables.”

“You made roasted chicken?” Keith said sceptically.

“Logan showed me how.”

“Logan can cook?”

“His father made him learn. Logan can make some pretty fancy dishes.”

“I think I might like having Logan around.”

--

Lilly found Veronica at her locker on Monday morning. “So, how did it go?”

“It was nice. We spent the afternoon watching movies.” Veronica closed her locker. “I know Dad likes him. He invited Logan to join us for dinner.”

“Did your dad suffer brain damage or something?”

“It probably had to do with the fact that Logan was the one who actually made dinner.”

“Logan can cook?” Lilly said baffled.

“Don’t you remember? He got private lessons from some famous gourmet chef two summers ago.”

“I hardly remember what I did two hours ago let alone what Logan did two summers ago.”

“Oh, wait, you were in Europe with your parents that summer. No wonder you don’t remember.”

“Why would Logan agree to take cooking lessons?”

“He was fourteen and didn’t have anything better to do. Plus, he probably thought culinary skills would impress the ladies.” She smirked, “Or, at least in my case, the ladies’ fathers.”

“Logan never needed any special skills to impress the ladies.”

“He was fourteen, maybe he was planning ahead.” Veronica stopped in front of her classroom. “This is me. I’ll see you at lunch.”

Lilly stood there staring at the closed door for a moment.

She’d dated Logan for two years – two years - and she was realizing now that she didn’t know him at all.

--

Duncan sat on the bench adjacent to Veronica’s at the lunch table. “Hey.”

Veronica looked at him in disbelief. “Oh, so I exist now?” Scoffing, she shook her head and turned back to the books that were spread out in front of her.

“I want to talk to you,” he said hesitantly.

“Well, I wanted to talk to you last week, but you ignored me. So to be fair, why don’t you try again next week?” Standing, she gathered up her books and walked away.

Logan appeared beside him, tsking. “Shot down by Snow White. Such a shame.”

Duncan glared at him. “Yeah, after you turned her against me.”

“I did no such thing. Why would I waste my time with Veronica talking about you? We have much better things to do when we’re together.”

“You’re an ass.”

“Why? Because I like the ex-girlfriend you dropped like yesterday’s garbage?”

“I didn’t-”

“No? Then how do you explain that the sweetest, nicest, most cotton candy pink girl at this school just brushed you off?”

Duncan floundered for a response, but he came up with nothing. His shoulders sagged. “It’s complicated.”

“Well, if more than twelve years of friendship doesn’t simplify matters, it must be complicated.”

“It’s not just something that I can say.” Duncan rose, “Never mind, don’t worry about it. I hope you’re happy with Veronica.” He left before Logan could stop him.

--

“Do you think I’d look pretty if my hair was short?” Veronica suddenly asked.

Without looking, Logan responded, “You’d look pretty if you were bald.” He sat up, tugging gently at the tips of her long blond hair. “Is there a reason why you want to lop off all your hair?”

“I look too much like my mother.”

“I personally think you’re better looking… much cuter.”

“So I shouldn’t cut my hair?”

“I’m saying that as your almost boyfriend that you should do whatever you want.”

“You don’t have an opinion?”

“I personally like your hair, but if you’re looking for a change… maybe bangs?”

“Bangs,” she said, intrigued by the idea. She smiled sweetly at him. “Thanks.”

--

Keith arrived home after a late night. He found Lianne passed out in the living room. Sitting down on the sofa chair, he sat there and waited for her to wake up.

He sat there for hours.

The sun was rising before she began to stir.

Slightly hung over, Lianne peeked her eyes open. The first thing she saw was the grim expression on her husband’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“This can’t keep happening, Lianne.”

She sat up, pushing her hair out of her face. “What can’t keep happening?”

“You’re drinking to the point of unconsciousness.” Keith leaned forward, “You can’t keep doing this, Lianne. We have an impressionable teenage daughter who finds you passed out on a daily basis.”

“I’m tired,” Lianne smiled, trying to pass his concerns off as nothing, “there’s nothing wrong with taking a nap.”

Keith reached behind him and slammed a box of empty bottles. “You mean these empty bottles came out of thin air. I collected these over a week.” He shook the box, making the glass bottles ring. “If looking at these doesn’t make you realize you have a problem, I don’t know what will.”

“You’re being silly, Keith. All those bottles were practically empty already.”

“Really? Then what about these?” He grabbed another box where all the bottles were at least half empty. “I didn’t realize we kept so much alcohol at home.”

Lianne tried to chuckle it off. “So I have a little drink now and again, I don’t see the problem.”

“The problem is that you’re an alcoholic and I won’t have your behaviour affecting our daughter.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that you need help, Lianne.” He looked at her steadily so she knew he meant business. “And if you’re not willing to get any, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

--

“I see you went with my suggestion.” Logan brushed Veronica’s bangs to the side, kissing her forehead in greeting.

“Hey, no PDAs.” Veronica pushed his hand away. “You’re still only my almost boyfriend.”

“PDAs? Public displays of affection? But they’re so fun and time worthy.”

“True, but you’re not.”

“Fun?” he pouted.

“Worthy,” she corrected.

“You wound me, mini Mars.”

“And I haven’t made up my mind yet.”

“No?” Logan put his hands on her hips and bent his knees so he could look at her head on. “You sure you haven’t decided? You’re not stringing me along because you’re nervous or afraid?”

“Stringing you along?” she considered. “Nope, I don’t think so.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

Veronica considered making a snarky remark to distract him, but decided to go with the truth. “I’m giving you time to change your mind.”

His knees went straight and his expression grim. “You don’t really think that I’m going to change my mind, do you?”

She shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know. I’m not exactly your type, Logan.”

“I have a type?” he said curiously.

“Outgoing… blonde… experienced.”

He stiffened at what the last one implied. “I’m not with you for sex. If that was all I wanted, there are a dozen other girls that are more than willing.”

“Maybe you enjoy the challenge.”

“Is that really what you think?”

“I don’t know what I think.” Veronica fiddled with the hem of her shirt.

“I think you do.”

She said softly, “You can have anybody. Why did you pick me?”

He could feel every muscle in his body relax in relief. Tilting her chin up so she was looking him in the eye, he answered, “Because you’re smart and beautiful, and I like being with you.” He dropped his forehead to hers, “But most of all, you’re honest. When you say you care about me, I know that you do.”

“I do,” she reassured him, “I do care about you.”

“I know.” He kissed her lips. “I see it in your eyes every time we’re together.” He took her hand, “Come on, I’ll walk you to class.”

Staring up at him, she took a breath before rising up on her tiptoes to press her mouth against his. Parting her lips, she sucked gently on his upper lip, before sweeping her tongue along his lower one.

Their short make out session was interrupted when someone disturbed Veronica’s precarious balance and she fell against Logan’s chest. Her head whipped around to find the culprit. “Lilly!”

“You’re going to be late for class,” she said with no remorse as she continued down the hall.

“Don’t worry,” Logan grinned, “we’ll pick this up later.”

As they headed down the hall, Logan grinned, “So does this mean I’ve graduated from the status of almost boyfriend?”

--

Logan got home from dropping Veronica off and was surprised to find Lilly in his room. “What are you doing here?”

“Booty call,” she grinned. She was sprawled across his bed in her most seductive pose.

“Why don’t you take your booty and call on someone else?” He gave her a quick once over. “I’m not interested.”

“You’re really that serious about Veronica?” she narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

He smirked cynically. “What? This is you testing me?” He sneered, “So did I pass?”

“You better not be using her,” Lilly said, threateningly.

“I’m pretty sure you’re the lying manipulator here.”

“And you’re the poor little rich boy that likes to pout and moan about every little thing.” Lilly hopped off the bed to stand in front of him. “You know, if you really wanted me back so badly, you didn’t have to stoop to using my best friend to get my attention.”

“Yet your attention was got.” Logan dropped his keys on the dresser. “And for your information, I’m with Veronica because I actually like her. She was always my first choice.”

“So you’re saying that the only thing stopping you was little brother?” she said, amused. “Oh, I’m sure Donut would enjoy hearing that.”

Logan studied her. He’d been with her long enough to be able to read her moods. “It bothers you, doesn’t it? You can’t stand the thought that Veronica might like me better than she likes you.”

She scoffed. “You don’t know what you talking about.”

“You loved that Veronica was dating Duncan, because you knew that he wouldn’t mind it when you interrupted their dates and she came running at your beck and call.”

“It’s not my fault that I’m more entertaining than Donut.”

“Well, that’s not the case anymore, is it?”

Lilly didn’t know what to say. So she glared at him. “If you hurt her, you’re dead.”

“Empty threats, Lilly.”

“I’m watching you.” She walked away.

“I always knew you had stalker tendencies.”

Down the stairs, Lilly ran into Aaron.

“Lilly, it’s been awhile,” Aaron said engagingly.

“I’ve been busy. You know, girl crisis.” She walked out the front door. “See you later, Mr. Echolls.”

--

Lilly lifted her head when Duncan entered her room. “What’s up, Donut?”

“I wanted to ask you…”

“Well?” she urged impatiently.

“Do you think it’s possible that Veronica might…”

“What, Duncan? Don’t tell me that you want her back now that she’s with Logan. Because it’s not going to happen.”

He took a breath. “That she might be our sister.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Mom said-”

“And you believed her?” Lilly laughed hilariously. “Celeste just told you what she needed to so she would get her way.”

“Why would she lie about something this major? I can’t believe she’d just make it up.”

“Celeste would tell you the sky was green if it got you to do what she wanted.”

“She showed me pictures.”

“Of what?”

“Dad… and Mrs. Mars… at the Camelot.”

“Really.” She finally sat up, intrigued. “Were the photos dated?”

Duncan shook his head. “But they were recent.”

“That’s only proof that they’re having an affair now. Not seventeen years ago.”

He shook his head. “I still can’t believe Mom would lie.”

--

Veronica buried her face against Logan’s shoulder in embarrassment. “I can’t believe I did that.”

“Believe me, I was as surprised as my mom to find you straddling my unsuspecting body.” He kissed the top of her head. “Don’t worry, my mom won’t hold it against you.”

“You told me your parents were in LA,” she said accusingly.

“Dad decided to leave Mom in Neptune.” Logan rubbed a hand soothingly up and down her back. “Now, would you enlighten me to the cause of your rather unexpected – but highly welcomed – behaviour?”

Veronica had stopped by the Echolls’ mansion to surprise Logan. She’d found him asleep in bed with the movie ‘Easy Rider’ playing on screen. Impulsively, she’d climbed on to the bed with him. She had straddled his hips and was in the process of waking him when Lynn Echolls burst through the door startling both of them.

Logan’s drowsy mind first registered the feel of his girlfriend pressed against him. It took another few seconds before he noticed his mother in the room with them. Innocent smile in place, he asked, “Mom, what’s up?” all the while, holding his inching girlfriend in place.

“I was about to invite you out to dinner with me and Sadie… but you have company.” Lynn smiled at the blond. “Hello, Veronica. It’s been a long time.”

Cheeks blushing red, Veronica responded, “Hi, Mrs. Echolls.”

“Make sure Logan feeds you,” Lynn said cheerily. “If left to his own devices, I’m sure he’d spend the night playing video games and forget to eat. Have a fun time, kids. Logan, I’ll be home late.” She was out the door before either could respond.

Now Veronica was left trying to hide her embarrassment while she attempted to explain her actions.

Logan heard her mumble something against his chest. “I’m sorry, I don’t have my girl-mumble dictionary. Could you repeat that in English, please?”

Huffing, she rolled off him. “I wanted to surprise you… you look cute when you’re sleeping.”

“So cute, you couldn’t resist taking advantage of my sleeping body?” He grinned cockily. Throwing a leg over hers, he shifted above her. “Well, now that we’re both awake…” Logan dipped his head.

She gasped in delight when his lips met her neck. “Logan.” She arched into his touch when his hand slid under her shirt to cup her breast.

Unconsciously, over the course of two weeks, Logan had systematically breached Veronica’s defences.

They had started with innocent kisses, progressing quickly to heavy make out sessions. Not long after, his hands had sought silent permission to dip beneath her bra. Tonight, he had her topless and was suckling at her sweet, firm breasts.

Veronica’s hands were buried in his hair, gripping him close as his tongue twined around and lapped at her nipple. Antsy to touch his bare skin, she gathered the back of his shirt, desperate to pull it off over his head.

He abandoned his treasure for the second necessary to throw off his shirt. Latching on to her as yet neglected nipple, he tried valiantly to bring her pleasure while ignoring the heat brought on by Veronica’s every wandering hands.

Logan sighed in resignation that his efforts weren’t distracting enough for her. He trailed wet kisses up her clavicle to her neck while his hands slid down her sides, quickly and expertly undoing the buttons of her pants. With her fly gapping wide, his large hand snuck under her lace panties.

Veronica’s hands froze still at his back. Her eyes popped open to look at him nervously.

He kissed her lips softly, quietly gauging her willingness. “Relax,” his voice soft and soothing, “I won’t do anything you’re not ready for.” He dragged a long finger along her slit. “You’re so wet for me, baby.”

She mewed at the new sensation, the pads of her fingers pressing into his back. Her breath hitched when she felt that same finger seeking entrance inside her.

“God, you’re so beautiful.” He laid a kiss on her forehead before pulling away so that he could watch the changing expressions on her face as his finger sunk in. He marvelled as her entire body reacted to the ministrations of a single long digit. Logan watched in amazement as her mouth fell open and her head flung back when he squeezed another finger into the mix.

“Logan,” she whimpered in need, “more.”

The pace of his thrusting fingers increased at the innocent request. “Let go, baby,” he guided softly, his deep voice urging. “Come for me.” Curling his fingers slightly, he ran the tips along her inner walls while brushing his thumb over her clit. It was enough to send her senses spiralling.

Her body arched, her voice trapped in her throat in a silent scream of release. She clenched Logan tightly, not wanting to let him go.

Logan didn’t pull away until her body cooled and went limp. He wiped his hand clean on his shirt before cuddling closer to her.

Veronica leaned into him, breathing in his very masculine scent as thoughts began to whirl in her overly active mind. “I’ve never…” she started to say.

“Did you like it?” He studied her seriously now that the passion had dimmed.

Her cheeks flushed red before she nodded.

“Good.” He claimed her lips for a deep kiss. “Then you won’t mind if I do it again.”

“Now?” her eyes widened in shock.

He chuckled. “Well, if you insist.”

--

Lilly smiled knowingly at her best friend.

Veronica could feel the burn of embarrassment creeping up the back of her neck. “Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?” she asked innocently.

“Like you know I’ve done something naughty.”

“Have you?”

The flush moved to her face.

Lilly shrieked with laughter. “Finally!”

“What?” Veronica frowned, confused by her friend’s reaction.

“You dated Duncan for months and the two of you never went beyond a good lip lock. Three weeks with Logan and you let him in your pants.”

“Are you calling me a slut?”

“No, of course not. It’s not like you’ve done it with him yet.” Lilly hugged Veronica, “You’re in your first adult relationship. I’m impressed.”

“You’re being silly.”

Lilly tapped her chin thoughtfully. “It was smart of you to choose Logan. He knows what he’s doing.”

“So it actually was that good?” Veronica had assumed the mind blowing experience was due to her own inexperience and not knowing what to expect.

“He’s ruined you.” Lilly shook her head, giggling the entire time. “Let me just say that Logan is not your average sixteen year old boy. When it comes to sex, he performs at a college level.”

“Whereas everyone else is at the high school level?” Veronica arched an eyebrow.

“More like kindergarten.”

“You should know,” Veronica muttered dryly.

Lilly’s mouth fell open in shock before she collapsed into shrieking laughter. Calming, she looked at Veronica seriously. “So, what did he do?”

--

Lianne answered the front door and was surprised to find who was on the other side. “Duncan, Veronica’s not home.” She thought for a moment. “She’s at school, where you should be.”

“I needed to talk to you,” Duncan said agitated. “Can I come in?”

“Of course.” Lianne stepped out of the doorway, allowing him passed. “What’s wrong, Duncan?”

“I needed to know for sure.” He stopped short and turned to look her dead in the eye. “Is Veronica my sister?” He saw her hesitation. “I know that you’ve been having an affair with my dad. On and off since high school. I promise I won’t tell anyone, but I need to know. Is Veronica my sister?”

--

The Kanes and the Echolls’ met at Sadie Casablancas’ annual Halloween party. Lynn and Celeste hugged in greeting, while Jake and Aaron shook hands.

“How are the kids?” Aaron asked. “I haven’t seen Lilly haunting our doorstep lately. Duncan either for that matter.”

Celeste smiled stiffly. “Lilly’s such a handful. It’s hard to keep track of who her latest beau is.”

“And Duncan’s been busy with school.” Jake said proudly, “He mentioned possibly running for student president next year. Maybe he’s already preparing his campaign.”

Lynn patted her husband’s arm. “I forgot to tell you. It seems that Logan and Veronica are dating now.”

“Really?” Aaron said noncommittally.

“I’m surprised to hear that,” Celeste commented. “Especially since I know Duncan broke up with Veronica little more than a month ago.”

“It was the same for Lilly and Logan, but they’re young,” Lynn smiled, “they bounce back quickly.”

“To be young and in love,” Aaron sighed wistfully.

Lynn agreed, “Logan seems very happy with Veronica.”

Jake laughed, “And how is Keith handling Logan as Veronica’s boyfriend? If I remember, Logan can be quite the handful.”

“They get along famously. They must since Logan was invited to spend Thanksgiving with the Mars’.” Lynn touched Aaron’s arm again. “Now you don’t have to feel bad that you won’t be home for the holiday. You can focus all your concentration and energy on your shoot.”

--

Across town, Neptune High was hosting their own Halloween dance. Everyone was dressed up, their costumes varying from ghosts to ghouls, fairies to princesses.

Lilly had arrived dressed as Madonna, cones and all, with her arms wrapped around the school’s star quarterback. She abandoned him the instant she saw Veronica to greet her. “Looking hot, Veronica Mars!”

“Watch the cones, Lilly!” Veronica giggled, dodging the dangerous points.

“How did Logan convince you to wear this?” Lilly gestured for her conservative friend to spin around.

Logan gave his girlfriend an appreciative look, enjoying her sexy nurse outfit, jaunty hat and all. “She lost a bet.”

Veronica blushed at the memory.

Intrigued, Lilly demanded, “What kind of bet?”

Her cheeks flushed even redder.

Logan grinned wickedly.

“What?” Lilly was itching to know.

He leaned toward her and whispered, “Her dad noticed the hickey she left on me and not the one I left on her.”

“And where exactly were these hickeys?” She looked them over, checking the usual places.

“My collar bone.” Veronica touched the mark that was hidden by the uniform.

Lilly noticed Logan pat a spot at his waist, just above his left hip. “How did Mr. Mars see that?”

“Logan fell asleep on my couch.”

“My shirt must have ridden up.” Logan tugged at his pale green scrubs, smirking the entire time.

Veronica punched him gently on the arm. “It’s not funny.”

“You should have seen the look on his face when he realized what my ‘bruise’ was.” Logan shuddered at the thought. “I thought he was going to kill me.”

“At least you didn’t get the two hour birds and bees lecture. I’m also not allowed to go to your house unless I can guarantee that your parents will be home.” She tapped his cheek. “Which means that I can’t come over like we planned. My dad knows your parents are at the Casablancas’ tonight.”

Hands in his pockets, he flapped the sides of his unbuttoned lab coat. “I guess we’ll have to find alternative date locations.”

“Or you could stop leaving hickeys on each other,” Lilly suggested gaily.

“Where’s the fun in that?” Veronica remarked without thinking.

“What have you done with my innocent best friend?” Lilly demanded.

“You’re welcome,” Logan said cheekily. Wrapping his arm around Veronica’s waist, tugging her against his side, he remarked, “Come on, this party blows. Let’s go find somewhere more… private.”

“So we can go play doctor?” Veronica joked.

“I am dressed for the part.” He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.

Veronica played along, replying huskily, “Oh, doctor.”

“Horn dogs!” Lilly called after the retreating pair.

“You’re just jealous,” Meg commented when she joined the abandoned brunette.

“Please, I’ve had Logan. I’m not missing anything.”

“You never had Logan the way that Veronica does.”

Lilly glanced at the door her friends had disappeared through. “Veronica has a way of bringing out the best in people. Logan’s a completely different person when he’s with her.”

“A better person?”

“A happier person.” Lilly turned to look the younger blond in the eye. “He’s happy with her. Something I thought I’d never see.”

Meg frowned, “You didn’t think they’d work out.”

“I didn’t think Logan could be happy.”

--

Logan and Veronica had retreated to the parking lot where they had climbed into the backseat of his Xterra and proceeded to make out.

Straddling his lap, Veronica bent her head down to take his lips with hers over and over again. “Oh, doctor, is there something wrong with me? I’m feeling hot all over.”

Logan chuckled. “You sound like a star from a bad porno.”

“I know. It’s the one that was playing when I found you… pleasuring yourself in your room.”

“Impossible.” He flipped her so that she was beneath him. “I only watch the most exceptional pornos.”

“Emm,” she hummed, “maybe instead of spending so much time watching them, you should come find me and act them out.”

He groaned at the thought. “Don’t tease me like that.”

“I’m not teasing.”

His cock was throbbing and threatening to explode at the mere thought of Veronica’s willingness to give up her virginity. He kissed her deeply. “Are you sure?”

She nodded eagerly. In demonstration, she reached for the ties keeping his scrubs up. Veronica looked up, startled when his hands stopped her. “What’s wrong?”

“Your first time is not going to be in the back of my SUV.” He pressed his lips to her collar bone. “It should be special… something to remember for the rest of your life.”

“So when?”

“It also shouldn’t be rushed.”

“Logan-”

He stopped her with a finger over her lips. “Don’t worry. We’ll know when the right moment is.”

She nodded, ducking her head with embarrassment over her behaviour and pleased at his thoughtfulness. In appreciation, her hands went back to work untying his pants.

“Veronica-”

“We’re not going all the way in the backseat of your truck, but that doesn’t mean I can’t… you know.”

He grinned at her embarrassment. “Give me a hand job?”

“Exactly.” Her hands were in his pants, her soft, cool fingers wrapping around him.

He hissed in delight, carefully rearranging them so that he was sitting up with Veronica straddling his lap. “Did I tell you tonight that you look hot?”

“No, but I got the gist from all the very intense staring.” Her right hand pumped up and down the length of his member, while her left reached down to massage his balls.

“I should have never taken that bet with you.”

“Why not? You won.”

“I’ve been rock hard all night. And the scrubs don’t exactly hide that fact well.”

“That’s why you always stood behind me.”

“I kept imagining doing this.” His hands grabbed each side of her skimpy nurse uniform and tugged. All the buttons unsnapped, leaving the delicious sight of Veronica’s body encased in pink lace underwear. His eyes glazed over. “So hot.” He dropped his head back, trying to hold back his orgasm.

She ran her thumb over the small beads of moisture seeping from the tip of Logan’s cock. “Logan, come for me.”

“Not yet,” he said through clenched teeth.

“Why not?”

“Too soon.” The pressure was almost unbearable, but Logan had always prided himself on his staying power. He wouldn’t give in. Not yet.

Her devious hands began to work faster, her grip firmer. She watched the droplets of sweat forming on his forehead. “Come for me.”

Logan was seconds away form giving in when they were interrupted by a knock on the window. He instantly deflated as Veronica scrambled to close the snaps of her dress. He dropped back in frustration.

Once she was redressed, Veronica tucked him back into his pants. Kissing his cheek, she said softly, “I’m sorry.”

“Not your fault,” he said hoarsely. A quick glance showed that they were presentable and Logan reached over to lower the tinted glass. “What do you want, Dick?”

“The guys are getting a few kegs and heading over to Madison’s. Hurry up!” The blond boy announced as he backed away from the vehicle to catch up with the others.

Logan rolled the window back up. “I’m gonna kill him.”

Veronica ran a soothing hand down his neck. “It’s still early, we can stop by and check it out if you want.”

“Perfect,” he groused before climbing out of the backseat.

--

“Don’t touch me, Dick.” Logan seethed as he nursed at the bottle of beer in his hand.

“What’s got your panties in a bunch?” Dick withdrew the arm he was about to put over his shoulder.

Logan simply glared.

Dick’s eyes widened in understanding – a leap only his one track mind could make. “Sorry, dude, the boat wasn’t rocking.”

“There won’t be any rocking for you anytime soon either.”

“Huh?”

“Rumours of Dick Junior’s herpes are spreading among the fems as we speak.”

Dick gapped at him in shock. “That’s cold, dude.”

“Next time just leave a message on my phone.” Logan wandered off to locate his girlfriend. He finally found her seated on a couch with Meg and Lilly. Joining them, he lifted Veronica into his lap as he took her seat. “Where’s Mr. Quarterback?” he asked Lilly, “Did you ditch your date already?”

“Mr. Grabby Hands is nursing some bruised balls as we speak.”

“You didn’t put out? Your reputation as a sure thing will be ruined if this gets out.”

Lilly smiled wickedly, “I am a sure thing… on my terms. He’s the one that didn’t want to give me half an hour at the party with my girls.” She sighed in disappointment. “Boys are so impatient.” She turned to Meg. “Where’s Cole, anyway?”

“He had to go home. His curfew was at eleven.”

“And he ditched you here?”

“We can drop you off,” Veronica offered. “Logan has to take me home soon anyway.” Her hand rubbed up and down his chest. “Right, Logan?”

“It’s on the way to 06-dom,” he said magnanimously.

“Before Veronica decides to maim you for you thinly veiled insult of her neighbourhood, I thank you for the ride. I didn’t feel like going home… so early… which is why I didn’t go with Cole.”

“Problems with the ‘rents?” Lilly inquired, idly running a finger down Meg’s arm.

Meg sighed, “More like problems with Cole.”

“What did Snow White do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Meg protested.

“I was referring to Cole,” Lilly said dryly.

Veronica pressed her face against Logan’s neck to muffle her giggles. Logan chose to laugh outright.

“Lilly,” Meg said, unsure whether she should be affronted or amused.

“What, the boy’s more innocent than Veronica.”

“Hey!” the blond in question took issue with the remark.

“More innocent than Veronica pre-Logan,” Lilly finished her statement.

“I wasn’t that innocent,” Veronica pouted.

“Babe, you’re still that innocent.” Logan kissed her nose.

“Humph, see if you get lucky anytime soon.”

“That’s harsh, Veronica,” Lilly shook her head in amusement.

“I like that you’re innocent.” Logan hugged her tight. “Helps curb some of my wickedness.”

All the girls burst out laughing.

“I said ‘some’,” Logan grumbled, “not all.”

“Come on,” Veronica patted his shoulder. “This innocent girlfriend needs to get home or she won’t be allowed out with her wicked boyfriend again.”

Lilly rubbed Meg’s arm again. “Hey, don’t worry about Cole. If he’s not the right guy just dump him. There’s plenty of other fish in the sea.”

Meg sighed, “He’s just so jealous all the time… and he doesn’t trust me.”

“Is there reason for it?”

“Of course not!”

Lilly shrugged. “How am I supposed to know what hides behind your good girl façade?”

“I don’t even flirt.”

“So he’s a jealous freak. Dump him, because nothing you do or say will make things better.” Lilly gave Logan a pointed look.

He glowered, “I had reason to be jealous. You were spreading your knees for every guy in a ten mile radius.”

She smirked, “Only ten?”

“Which is why we never worked.” Logan nudged Veronica to her feet. “Come on, babe. Let’s get you home.”

“Bye, Lilly. Don’t get into too much trouble.” Veronica waved to her friend as they left.

“There’s no such thing as too much.”

--

“Mom, I’m home!” Veronica called as she pushed the door open. When she received no answer, she looked at Logan. “I guess she’s sleeping.”

“How’s she doing, anyway?” Logan closed the door behind him.

“She’s going to AA meetings three times a week. She’s a week away from getting her ’30 day’ chip.” Veronica shrugged. “I guess she’s okay. She talks more with Dad… they’ve worked a little on what made her start drinking in the first place.”

Logan hugged her. “This must be so hard on you.”

“At least she’s getting help.” She switched on the light in the kitchen and was met by a horrible sight. “Mom?”

Lianne Mars was sprawled on the kitchen floor.

There was blood everywhere.

Logan grabbed Veronica before she could run over to the body. Forcing her out of the room, keeping her face buried against his chest, he pulled out his cell.

“911, please state the nature of your emergency.”

“I’d like to report a murder.”

*gape* *runs off to part 2* That was just evil, woman.
*squee* Thank you so much for writing for the challenge! One of the things I do is to leave detailed feedback for each submitted story in the challenge, and if you ever decide you're too good for it, you just let me know. ;-)

Someone else wrote a fic recently that had Logan admitting in his break-up letter to Lilly that he liked Veronica--of course my scatter-brain can't remember which one, now--but I think the idea is so intriguing. And that Lilly READ the letter and KNEW, that's even more intriguing. Her calling Veronica to hound the truth out of her seems so very like Lilly.

I loved this little exchange: Logan pulled up in the Mars driveway, hopped out and opened her door.

“You could be mugged, kidnapped… trip on those tiles, sprain an ankle…”

...it was so fun and flirty...and then the kiss ... *sighs longingly* Of course I loved it. :P

I also loved THIS: “Logan’s come over dozens of times before.”

He doesn’t deserve to be killed by a polished gun.”
...because you pulled in humor to what was a pretty shitty situation, and of course Keith is Mr. Protective. I loved the bantery feel of this.

One nit: I thought Logan giving her the fifty dollar bill (even though it was folded up into a fun shape) was a little patronizing, and I'm not sure Veronica would have accepted it. I think it would be important--even to Pink Veronica--not to appear to be a gold-digger.

I loved this little exchange, too: “I’m saying that as your almost boyfriend that you should do whatever you want.”

“You don’t have an opinion?”

“I personally like your hair, but if you’re looking for a change… maybe bangs?”

“Bangs,” she said, intrigued by the idea. She smiled sweetly at him. “Thanks.”
...it was just so innocent and sweet. :D

THIS was just so completely innocent and heartfelt...it broke me:
“Is that really what you think?”

“I don’t know what I think.” Veronica fiddled with the hem of her shirt.

“I think you do.”

She said softly, “You can have anybody. Why did you pick me?”

He could feel every muscle in his body relax in relief. Tilting her chin up so she was looking him in the eye, he answered, “Because you’re smart and beautiful, and I like being with you.” He dropped his forehead to hers, “But most of all, you’re honest. When you say you care about me, I know that you do.”

“I do,” she reassured him, “I do care about you.”

AWWWWWWW...*smooshes them both together*

GUH: Unconsciously, over the course of two weeks, Logan had systematically breached Veronica’s defences.

Antsy to touch his bare skin, she gathered the back of his shirt, desperate to pull it off over his head.
...*shivers* I LOVE the idea of Logan and Pink!Veronica, but even more so with him pleasuring her. Yum.

This was cute, and gave me a chuckle: Veronica leaned into him, breathing in his very masculine scent as thoughts began to whirl in her overly active mind.

“Well, if you insist.”
...so like Logan to turn it around on her like that.

Dude, and having Lianne be murdered was just inspired. I was on pins and needles to see where you took it...
Woah, there are so many intricacies in this, it's fantastic. I love this alternate look at the first season and all the details. The Veronica/Logan moments are so cute and Lilly trying to figure out what's going on is great. I loved that she tried to test Logan.

Anyway next part because I have no patience for cliffhangers!
